Background info
In May 1990, the United Nations Economic and Social Council passed a resolution, suggesting a world conference on women be held in 1995.
In March 1992, a decision was made at the 36th meeting of the UN Commission on the Status of women: thank and accept the invitation of the Chinese government, the UN Fourth World Conference on Women is set to be held in Beijing between September 4 to 15, 1995, with the term extending for 10 working days. Delegates to the meeting are all UN members and representatives from the UN special institutions and related organizations will participate in the capacity of observers. Plus the Non-governmental Organizations Forum to be held during the meeting, the conference will become a large international meeting of a considerable scale. The conference will focus on the theme of equality, development and peace through action, along with the subsidiary subjects of health, education and employment. The meeting is aimed at examining and appraising the implementation of the Nairobi Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women by the Year 2000, working out and passing the Program of Action to further speed up the implementation of the Nairobi Strategies, and urging the governments of all countries and the international community to make new political promises so as to ensure the realization of the established targets in the last five years of the century. The meeting will also make sure that all the issues concerned by women be put high in the agenda of the international community.
The United Nations will issue a set of six stamps in commemoration of the meeting on September 5,1995. The six stamps are designed by Mr. Ding Shaoguang of China. As host, the Chinese government will issue a set of four commemorative stamps on the same subject, the Fourth World WomenĄŻs Conference of the United Nations, on September 4, 1995.
