Background
China Post scheduled the issuance of a set of commemorative stamps titled "International Day of Older Persons" on October 1, 2018. The set contains 1 stamp with a face value of 1.20 yuan.

Population aging is a prominent social issue in the world today. To arouse the attention of all countries to the problem of population aging, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 14, 1990, deciding to designate October 1 of each year as "International Day of Older Persons" starting from 1991. October 1, 2018, marked the 28th "International Day of Older Persons".

China is one of the countries with a relatively high degree of population aging in the world. Addressing population aging, improving the quality of life and well-being of older persons, and safeguarding their dignity and rights require the joint efforts of the whole society.

This set of stamps is designed with a centrally symmetrical composition, and five scenarios are used to represent five principles closely related to older persons. The middle part of the picture uses cartoon techniques to depict the image of a happy and loving elderly couple. The traditional Chinese decorative patterns surrounding them convey best wishes for the health, longevity and well-being of older persons, and this scenario embodies the principle of independence for older persons. The patterns in the four semi-circles at the top, bottom, left and right of the stamp respectively show scenes of older persons practicing tai chi, doing gardening, receiving rehabilitation care, and working as volunteers, which represent the principles of dignity, self-fulfillment, care and participation respectively.

The stamp uses Chinese red as the background color, reflecting strong Chinese characteristics. The contrast between red and blue enhances the visual impact of the stamp.

This set of stamps was designed by Liu Zhao and Zhang Fan. Liu Zhao has previously designed stamps such as Ma Lianliang's Stage Art, The 110th Anniversary of the Founding of Nanjing University, Thangka, and The 120th Anniversary of the Founding of Jiaotong University.
