In June 1924, with the support of the Chinese Communist Party and the Soviet Union, Sun Yat-sen, the pioneer of the Chinese revolution, founded the "Chinese Nationalist Party Army Officer Academy" in Guangzhou. Due to its location on Huangpu Island (Whampoa Island) in the southeast of Guangzhou, it became known in history as the Whampoa Military Academy. Sun Yat-sen served as the academy's chancellor. At the opening ceremony, he clearly stated the academy's founding mission: "To build a revolutionary army and save China from peril." In practice, the Whampoa Military Academy trained a large number of military and political talents for the Chinese revolution. As one of the world's four most famous military academies, alongside the United States Military Academy at West Point, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, and the Frunze Military Academy in the Soviet Union, the Whampoa Military Academy has been a source of great pride for the people of Guangzhou. Every Chinese person born or raised in southern China shares a deep and enduring Whampoa sentiment, passed down from generation to generation.

The stamp design employs a combination of virtual and realistic elements. The background features the gate of the former Whampoa Military Academy, with simple pen-and-ink lines outlining the white walls and ancient trees of the academy. The foreground is taken from the oil painting 1924 Whampoa Military Academy by Pan Jiajun, created as part of the National Major Historical Subject Art Creation Project, depicting a parade scene at the academy. The stamp's solemn atmosphere encapsulates the academy's 90 years of history.

China Post will issue a commemorative stamp for the "90th Anniversary of the Founding of the Whampoa Military Academy" on June 16, 2014. The set consists of one stamp with a face value of 1.20 yuan. The stamp measures 50×30 mm. The stamp was designed by Li Qun and Chen Xusheng, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Works using a combination of offset and intaglio printing. The design incorporates the oil painting 1924 Whampoa Military Academy by Pan Jiajun.
