Background info
Peking University is the first national comprehensive university in China's modern history. Founded in 1898, it was initially named the Metropolitan University and began to use its current name in 1912. For the past century, Peking University has been striving for national prosperity and has established a revolutionary tradition of patriotism, progress, democracy and science during its long-term course of development and struggle. Generation after generation a large number of talents have been cultivated here, resulting in important thinking theories, technological and cultural achievements. Peking University has made great contributions to the national independence, people's liberation movements, national prosperity and people's wealth. At the point of the coming of a new century, Peking University in form of new image is working hard to promote the strategy of "revitalizing China through science and education" and to be one of the first class socialist universities in the world.
