Background
China Post scheduled to issue a set of 6 special stamps and 1 souvenir sheet themed "Chinese Dinosaurs" on May 19, 2017. The stamps feature the following species respectively: Tsintaosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus, Huayangosaurus, Sinosauropteryx, Gigantoraptor and Microraptor, while the souvenir sheet depicts Mamenchisaurus. The total face value of the full set is 15.30 yuan.Dinosaurs are reptiles that emerged in the middle to late Triassic period (approximately 234 million years ago). Among them, non-avian dinosaurs became extinct during the mass extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period (around 66 million years ago), while another branch of dinosaurs evolved into birds and has survived to this day. Boasting abundant dinosaur fossil deposits, China is often hailed as "the top country for dinosaur discoveries". Although dinosaur research in China started relatively late, it has developed rapidly. Over nearly a century, China has taken a leading position globally in the discovery and research of paleontological fossils. By May 2014, 244 genera and species of dinosaurs had been named in China, ranking first in the world.
Starting from 1951, paleontological themes have been featured on stamps in many countries and regions successively, among which stamps themed on reptiles—especially dinosaurs—are the most popular. In 1958, China issued the Special Stamps No.22 "Chinese Paleontology", which included images of the Lufengosaurus skeleton and its restored form. This was the world’s first stamp printed with a dinosaur figure. The "Chinese Dinosaurs" special stamps marked the first time that China Post issued stamps with dinosaurs as the central theme. With restored images of dinosaur fossils excavated in China as the main content, the overall designs are dynamic and combine scientific accuracy with artistic appeal. On the stamp sheet, Yangchuanosaurus and Huayangosaurus—two species with distinct physical characteristics—serve as the visual focus. Dinosaurs that lived in the Mesozoic Era are arranged in a circular pattern radiating outwards from the center. The margins of the stamp sheet also depict several other types of dinosaurs and the ecological environment of that time. The souvenir sheet features Mamenchisaurus as the main subject, with the image of Tuojiangosaurus on its margins, depicting the ecological environment of the Earth during the Jurassic period.
