Background
The commemorative stamp set "30th Anniversary of China's Polar Scientific Expedition" was issued by China Post on November 20, 2014. The set includes two stamps with a total face value of 2.70 yuan, catalog number 2014-28. The stamps were designed by Wang Tao and Jiang Qun, and printed using offset printing by Shenyang Post and Telecommunications Printing Factory in Liaoning Province. Each stamp measures 40×30 mm, with 20 stamps printed continuously per sheet. Anti-counterfeiting features include anti-counterfeiting paper, anti-counterfeiting ink, shaped perforations, and fluorescent spray codes. The responsible editor was Dong Yan.The first stamp, "Antarctic Scientific Expedition," features China's Antarctic research stations—Taishan, Kunlun, Zhongshan, and Great Wall—along with Mount Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica. The second stamp, "Arctic Scientific Expedition," depicts the icebreaker research vessel Xue Long (Snow Dragon) and China's Arctic Yellow River Station. The stamp designs use contrasting blue and orange tones, placing the research stations and vessel in the icy environments of the polar regions. The contrast between warm and cool colors creates a broad, expansive visual effect, with a cinematic style inspired by film imagery.
China's polar scientific expeditions began in the early 1980s. On November 20, 1984, China sent its first scientific expedition team to Antarctica, subsequently establishing the Great Wall, Zhongshan, Kunlun, and Taishan stations. In 2004, the Yellow River Station was established in the Arctic. By 2014, China had successfully organized 30 Antarctic expeditions, 6 Arctic Ocean expeditions, and 10 annual research programs at the Yellow River Station. China also operates the icebreaker Xue Long and maintains domestic research bases to support its polar programs.
