    Background info

    Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio, by Pu Songling, a writer of the Qing Dynasty, is a collection of about 500 supernatural short stories. Many of the stories are about love and marriage, such as "Xiang Yu", "Huanniang" and "Ah Xiu". The love stories are among the best in the collection, praising true love of young people while lashing out at the feudal ethics. With a graceful style of writing, detailed narration and description, the stories of flower and fox spirits reflect the reality of life, and contain the author's indignation and hopes. They represent a peak of ancient Chinese short stories.
