Background info
The Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze River has been the largest water control and hydropower project in the world so far. By preventing floods, generating electricity, providing water transport and supplying water, the Three Gorges Project will bring economic and social benefits and accelerate China's modernization construction. After ten years of construction, the project has achieved its second-phase targets, storing water on the left-bank dam, with successful trial double-lane navigation through five stages of ship locks, and with the first generating sets starting operation and being connected to the grid. This is a milestone in the construction of the Three Gorges Project.
