Background
The five revolutionary pioneers were all outstanding early generals of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. Huang Gonglue was one of the leaders of the famous Pingjiang Uprising and one of the founders of the Hunan-Hubei-Jiangxi Revolutionary Base. Xu Jishen was one of the founders and leaders of the First Red Army. Cai Shengxi, one of the founders of the 15th Red Army, and together with Xu, contributed significantly to the construction and development of the Hubei-Henan-Anhui Revolutionary Base. Wei Baqun, of Zhuang, was one of the leaders of the Baise Uprising, the Seventh Red Army and the Youjiang Revolutionary Base in Guangxi Province. Liu Zhidan was one of the founders of the Shaanxi-Gansu Revolutionary Base and the 26th Red Army.
