Background info
The First Session of the Ninth National People's Congress of PRC was held in Beijing on March 5, 1998. The term of this congress started at the end of this century and ends at the beginning of next century. The special historic tasks it faces make this congress take up an important place in the China's history. The cross-century five years of the Ninth NPC will witness that China successfully fulfills the tasks of reform and opening and modernization construction of the century. In these five years, a solid foundation will be laid for realizing the great goals for the first decade of the new century. The First Session of the Ninth NPC would further encourage and mobilize the Chinese people of all nationalities to unite more closely around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Jiang Zemin at its core, hold high the great banner of the Deng Xiaoping Theory and, full of confidence, push the great cause of building socialism with Chinese characteristics into the next century.
