Background
China Post scheduled the issuance of a set of 3 special stamps themed "Chagan Lake" on October 18, 2020. The three stamps are respectively titled "The Sacred Lake as a Painting", "Winter Scene of the Fishing Village", and "Fish Leaping on the Icy Lake", with a total face value of 3.90 yuan for the whole set. The planned circulation is 7.36 million pieces for the first and third stamps, and 7.3 million pieces for the second stamp.Chagan Lake, located in Songyuan City, Jilin Province, is called "Chagan Nur" in Mongolian, meaning "the white and sacred lake". As one of China's top ten freshwater lakes and the largest natural lake in Jilin Province, it is hailed as the "Holy Water Lake". In 2007, Chagan Lake was approved by the State Council as a national nature reserve and rated as a national 4A-level tourist attraction. It is not only a bright pearl on the Horqin Grassland but also a treasure trove rich in aquatic products. The renowned Chagan Lake Winter Fishing has been recognized by the State Council as a national intangible cultural heritage.
This set of stamps adopts a watercolor painting style, while integrating the rules and composition characteristics of traditional Chinese painting. With appropriately shaded colors and a balanced use of emptiness and solidity, the images are transparent, delicate, and rich in layers, forming a unique aesthetic connotation. While displaying the profound cultural heritage of fishing and hunting at Chagan Lake, the stamps present a beautiful scene of harmonious coexistence and interdependence between humans and nature.
The first stamp, "The Sacred Lake as a Painting", depicts the quiet and magnificent autumn scenery of Chagan Lake: blue waves rippling, reeds swaying, and waterbirds gathering. In the distance stands the Songhua River Diversion Project Monument by the lake. The second stamp, "Winter Scene of the Fishing Village", shows the busy figures of fishermen preparing for winter fishing by Chagan Lake in winter. The snow-covered land, hanging rime, rural cottages, and fishermen together constitute the unique fishing and hunting life scene of Chagan Lake. The third stamp, "Fish Leaping on the Icy Lake", captures the lively scene of crowds gathering on the frozen lake after the winter fishing net is cast. Fish leap out of the water and the lake surface is abuzz with activity in the foreground, while tall horses pull winches in the distance, presenting a bumper harvest scene of "fish leaping and people rejoicing in the busy winter fishing".
Designed by Yang Wenqing, this set of stamps was printed by Beijing Stamp Printing House using the photogravure technique.
