Background
This stamp set was officially issued on July 10, 2007. It consists of three stamps, each with a face value of 1.20 yuan, for a total face value of 3.60 yuan. The stamps were designed by Huang Huaqiang, with Tong Liying serving as the responsible editor, with original photography by Huang Huaming and Fu Shengjing, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Works using the photogravure process.

The Nanji Islands, located off the coast of Pingyang, Zhejiang, are China's first national-level marine nature reserve for shellfish and algae, and are part of UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Known as the "Immortal Mountains on the Blue Sea and the Kingdom of Shellfish and Algae," the area is exceptionally rich in shellfish and algae species, with beautiful island rocks, bays, and sandy beaches. The stamp set features three representative coastal landscapes, combining island scenery with characteristic marine life, presenting the unique marine ecology of the blue islands and raising awareness about the protection of coastal environments.

Stamp Designs and Historical Background

Sanpanwei

Sanpanwei is located in the southeastern part of Nanji Island, where weathered sea-eroded rock pillars stand along the coast, with waves crashing against the reefs. The lower left corner of the stamp features scallops and coral, presenting the coexistence of unique island rock formations and rare marine life. Sanpanwei is a landmark spot for enjoying the island's sea views.

Longchuan Reef

Longchuan Reef is a core reef area of the reserve, rich in seaweed and shellfish. The stamp depicts the reef on the sea surface, with brown algae and conch shells in the foreground, reflecting the rich shellfish and algae resources of this sea area. It is a natural habitat and breeding ground for marine life.

Dashacao

Dashacao is home to a rare shell-sand beach, with a crescent-shaped bay embracing clear blue waters and fine, white sand. The stamp presents a panoramic view of the bay, accompanied by a large conch shell in the foreground, highlighting the pure and beautiful coastal scenery of this unique beach.

Artistic and Design Features

The three stamps share a unified horizontal composition, using a combination of realistic photography and graphic design, with clear blue sea tones as the dominant color. Each stamp is divided into two layers: the distant island coastline and the foreground marine life, with the landscape and shellfish/algae complementing each other. The photogravure printing is clear and clean, accurately capturing the fine textures of the sea water, reefs, and shells. The overall design is fresh and soothing, presenting the unique blue island scenery of the Nanji Islands.

This stamp set is a special issue on China's marine nature reserves, available in stamp set and large sheet formats. Collectors often pair it with other coastal wetland and marine reserve landscape stamps, making it a distinctive addition to thematic collections on island ecology and coastal scenery.
