This stamp set was officially issued on June 19, 2007. It consists of three stamps, each with a face value of 1.20 yuan, for a total face value of 3.60 yuan. The stamps were designed by Li Defu, with Qin Wei serving as the responsible editor, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Works using the photogravure process.

Wudalianchi, located in Heilongjiang Province, is a UNESCO Global Geopark and a national nature reserve, often referred to as the "Natural Volcano Museum." Volcanic eruptions in the Qing Dynasty produced lava that blocked river channels, forming a series of interconnected dammed lakes and preserving rare volcanic landforms, including volcanic cones, lava plateaus, and stone seas. This stamp set features three core landscapes—Heilongshan (Black Dragon Mountain), Sanchi (Third Lake), and the Stone Sea—presenting the unique volcanic wonders of the northern region from three perspectives: the volcano itself, the lake scenery, and the lava wilderness, showcasing the magnificent geological heritage of nature.

Stamp Designs and Historical Background

Heilongshan (Black Dragon Mountain)

Heilongshan, also known as Laoheishan, is the most representative dormant volcano in the Wudalianchi volcanic cluster. The stamp captures the deep, funnel-shaped volcanic crater in full detail, with rich color layers on the crater walls and tenacious vegetation clinging to the edges, conveying the raw, majestic power of the volcano.

Sanchi (Third Lake)

Sanchi is the largest lake in the Wudalianchi cluster. The stamp depicts its clear, blue waters, with basalt reefs scattered in the lake and windswept grass along the shore. In the distance, the faint outline of a volcano adds to the serene and harmonious landscape of the lake and its volcanic surroundings.

Stone Sea

The vast expanse of solidified lava forms the Stone Sea, an endless field of basalt shaped like rolling waves. In the distance, a volcano rests on the horizon, presenting a magnificent wilderness landscape formed by ancient lava flows. This is the most iconic lava landscape of Wudalianchi.

Artistic and Design Features

The three horizontal stamps are arranged in a continuous sequence, with a realistic and rich painting style that emphasizes contrast between warm and cool tones. The first stamp uses warm yellow and ochre to depict the volcanic rock; the second uses clear blue tones to capture the lake; and the third uses reddish-brown hues to convey the desolate lava wilderness. The photogravure printing captures the fine textures of the rock, the light on the water, and the rugged surface of the land. The three-stamp continuous format unfolds like a scroll, presenting a seamless narrative of the northern volcanic landscape.

This stamp set is a special issue on China's Global Geoparks and natural scenery, available in stamp set and large sheet formats.
