On July 23, 2020, the Long March 5 carrier rocket sent the Tianwen-1 Mars probe into the Earth-Mars transfer orbit, successfully initiating China's first Mars exploration mission and marking the beginning of the country's planetary exploration endeavors. Tianwen-1's successful journey to Mars represents the first step in China's planetary exploration and a crucial milestone for the Chinese nation's march toward deeper space.

With the Tianwen-1 probe as the main visual element, the stamp depicts the process from the probe's launch to its orbital insertion. The background showcases Earth, Mars, and galaxies, symbolizing that this Mars mission lays the foundation for China's planetary exploration and implies future endeavors in more distant planetary and interplanetary exploration.

Designed by Yu Xue, the stamp is printed by Beijing Stamp Printing House using photogravure technology. It incorporates colorless fluorescent ink, which makes the orbital path glow under ultraviolet light.
