Background
Cultural heritage is an irreplaceable and precious resource for inheriting a country’s history and culture and sustaining the national spirit. Protecting cultural heritage and preserving the inheritance of national culture serves as an important cultural foundation for enhancing ethnic unity, safeguarding national reunification and social harmony. It is also a prerequisite for maintaining the diversity and creativity of world cultures and promoting the common development of humanity. In December 2005, China decided to establish the Cultural Heritage Day, which falls on the second Saturday of June every year. The year 2016 marked the 11th Cultural Heritage Day, with the theme "Integrate Cultural Heritage into Modern Life".To mark China’s 11th Cultural Heritage Day (June 11, 2016), China Post held simultaneous first-day stamp launch ceremonies in Xianfeng, Hubei Province and the Zhoukoudian Site. A set of special stamps titled Cultural Heritage Day was issued to spread the concept of cultural heritage protection through the medium of stamps. The set consists of 2 stamps printed in a se-tenant format, each centered on the logo of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage and the logo of China’s Cultural Heritage respectively. Representative Chinese entries selected from the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and the UNESCO World Heritage List are displayed around the logos in the form of line drawings. The overall style is simple and elegant with a clear theme.
The intangible cultural heritage items featured are: Kunqu Opera, Chinese Zhusuan (abacus calculation), paper cutting, the Dragon Boat Festival and guqin (seven-stringed zither), basically covering the major categories defined by UNESCO for intangible cultural heritage.
The cultural heritage items featured are: the Great Wall, Fujian Tulou, Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang, the Palace Museum in Beijing and the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang with its Terracotta Army.
