Background

The day April 22, 2005 marks the 36th "World Earth Day", its theme being "Protecting the Earth --- Development of Science and Building Harmony". The Earth Day originated in the United States. A large-scale citizens' campaign for environmental protection was launched on 22 April 1970. It was the beginning of the modern environmental protection activities. Having promoted the establishment of laws and regulations on environmental protection in many countries, the campaign was later recognized by the United Nations , and the "Earth Day" became the "World Earth Day". Since then, people of all countries across the world have taken large-scale activities for environmental protection on April 22 every year. It is our duty to protect and take care of the earth --- the home of us all.
