Background

China's auto industry started in 1953, when the First Automobile Works (FAW) was set up in Changchun City, Jilin Province. In 1957, the first truck new China made independently rolled out. In December 1964, the BJ212, alight cross-country automobile manufactured by the then Beijing Automobile Factory, was the first of its kind self-designed and developed by China, and put into batch production.

In general, China's auto industry has so far experienced two development stages, and now it has mounted onto the third stage.

The country's auto industry construction period lasted from 1953 to 1978, when the FAW and the Second Automobile Works and a group of auto components factories were built.

From late 1970s to early 1990s, the second development period, China's auto industry grew steadily, with a group of local manufacturers of light-and heavy-duty trucks emerging, and manufacture bases taking shape included: the First Automobile Works and the Second Automobile Works, China Heavy-Duty, South Auto, and those others in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang.

Since the 1980s, through technology introduction and absorbing high tech and renovation, China's auto industry recorded remarkable progress and entered upon a new phase, The products are mainly medium-sized trucks, including light, heavy-duty, and mini-trucks for commercial, special and, passenger uses.
