From late 1970s to early 1990s, the second development period, China's auto industry grew steadily, with a group of local manufacturers of light-and heavy-duty trucks emerging, and manufacture bases taking shape included: the First Automobile Works and the Second Automobile Works, China Heavy-Duty, South Auto, and those others in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang.

Since the 1980s, through technology introduction and absorbing high tech and renovation, China's auto industry recorded remarkable progress and entered upon a new phase, The products are mainly medium-sized trucks, including light, heavy-duty, and mini-trucks for commercial, special and, passenger uses. Among the products the proportion of sedans increased rapidly, and product greatly improved The automobile industry has become the pillar industry for the national economy.
