Background

In May, 1942, Mao Zedong delivered a speech in the rectification movement in Yan¡¯an. Soon ¡°Talks at Yan¡¯an Forum on Literature and Art¡± was published. In this talk, he summarized the fundamental historical experience in the development of literature and art since the revolution on 4 May, 1919. Taking the actual conditions in base area into consideration, he proposed ¡°literature and art should serve the workers, peasants and soldiers in our country¡±, which directed the development of proletarian literature and art work.
