This set of stamps is the third set of ˇ°Modern Chinese Scientistsˇ± series stamps issued by China.

Xiong Qinglai (1893-1969) was born in Mile of Yunnan Province. In 1906 he was admitted into the Yunnan Secondary School. He went to Belgium for study in 1913 and also went to study in Universities in France and Paris and so on. He got the degree of Master of Science in 1920. In 1931 he went to France again and got the degree of French National Doctor of Science. He set up the Faculties of Mathematics in both South East University and Qinghua University. He was the first one introducing the modern mathematics into China.

Tang Feifan (1897-1958) was born in Lilin of Hunan Province. In 1921 he graduated from Xiangya Medical College and got the Doctor degree of Medical Science. He went to study in Harvard in 1925. He produced the first lot of penicillin with simple and crude equipment made by himself. In 1956 he separated the trachoma virus at first time in the world. The virus now is called ˇ°Tang Virusˇ±.

Zhang Xiaoqian (1897-1987) was born in Changsha of Hunan Province. In 1921 he graduated from Xiangya Medical College. He used to be the Physical Professor of Xiehe Hospital, the Vice Chairman of the Chinese Academy of Medical Science, and the Member of the departments of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Liang Sicheng (1901-1972) was born in Xinhui of Guangdong Province. In 1924 he went to study in the Department of Construction of the University of Pennsylvania and finally got the degree of Master of Construction and Bachelor of Art. On behalf of China, he took part in the design work of the United Nations Building and was awarded the Honorable Doctor Degree by the Princeton University. He established the Departments of Construction for both North East University and Qinghua University. He also took part in the design work of the national emblem.
