Background
T105 "Chinese Disabled Persons (Semi-Postal Stamp)" special semi-postal stamps were issued on March 15, 1985. The set consists of 4 stamps, printed by photogravure, designed by Wu Jiankun, and printed by the Beijing Stamp Factory. This is New China's second set of semi-postal stamps, and all surcharge funds were used to support welfare undertakings for disabled persons.Theme of the Set
This set was launched on the first anniversary of the founding of the China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped. It aims to carry forward the humanitarian spirit, call on the whole society to understand and care for disabled persons, help disabled persons with rehabilitation, education, and employment, encourage disabled persons to be self-reliant and to participate equally in social life, gather social compassion, and raise funds for welfare undertakings for disabled persons.
Stamp Designs and Historical Background
Braille
The image depicts hands touching Braille. Braille is an important medium through which blind people obtain information, read, and study; it helps the visually impaired open a channel to understand the world and safeguards the blind's rights to study and communicate.
Sign Language
The design combines hand gestures and the shape of lips. Sign language is the language of communication for the hearing-impaired; silent gestures carry expression and build a bridge of communication between the hearing-impaired community and the outside world.
Artificial Limb
The image shows an artificial limb together with a healthy arm. An artificial limb is an important rehabilitation aid for persons with physical disabilities, helping the disabled recover mobility and regain the ability to live and work.
Wheelchair
The image shows a figure moving forward in a wheelchair. The wheelchair provides travel support for those with limited mobility and symbolizes disabled persons breaking through obstacles, forging ahead courageously, and facing life with indomitable will.
Artistic Design Features
The set adopts a modern abstract decorative style, with concise and condensed forms and bright colors full of tension. Below each stamp is the plum-blossom-shaped emblem of the China Welfare Fund for the Handicapped. The four stamps correspond respectively to the visually impaired, hearing-impaired, and physically disabled groups, with intuitive images and a warm and weighty theme. The design downplays sorrowful tones and focuses on conveying the spirit of self-reliance, equality, and care. Among JT stamps, it is a semi-postal-themed set with great humanistic warmth.
