Background
China Post is scheduled to issue a set of 2 special stamps titled Year of the Jiachen Dragon on January 5, 2024. The stamps are themed "Dragon Soaring with Vigor" and "Dragon Presenting Auspiciousness", with a total face value of 2.40 yuan. The planned circulation includes 29.98 million sets of individual stamps, 1.8 million sheetlets (Format 2), and 4.5 million stamp booklets.

Among the Twelve Chinese Zodiac animals, the dragon is a mythical beast symbolizing dignity and power, and is culturally associated with good fortune and auspiciousness among the people. Drawing on cultural elements from classic dragon motifs throughout Chinese history, the two stamps integrate zodiac cultural characteristics with the artistic features of stamp design. Using flat decorative design language, they interpret the dragon image for a new era and historical period, highlighting the cultural connotation of confidence and self-improvement in modern China. The designs are concise and vivid, with festive and auspicious colors conveying blessings of good fortune.

The first stamp, "Dragon Soaring with Vigor", depicts a golden dragon with head held high and full of vitality, symbolizing an upward-spiraling and unyielding spirit. Its form and posture are inspired by the Nine-Dragon Wall in the Forbidden City—agile and graceful yet retaining a sense of steadiness and dignity. Flanking the golden dragon are auspicious flame and cloud patterns, set against a vibrant Chinese red background, presenting a joyous and propitious scene of welcoming blessings.

The second stamp, "Dragon Presenting Auspiciousness", is derived from the traditional Chinese auspicious motif "Auspicious Dragon Surrounding a Jade Disc". The overall composition, combined with the stamp's shape, embodies the ancient Chinese concept of "Heaven is round, Earth is square", exuding harmony and solemnity. At the center, a jade disc bears the combined Chinese character "Xiangrui" (auspiciousness), symbolizing peace, completeness, and well-being. Above the disc, ruyi patterns convey wishes for harmony and good fortune; below, wave and cloud patterns, together with the dragon, depict the grand scene of "the dragon soaring across the four seas", expressing aspirations for favorable weather and national prosperity.

The two stamps feature three classic colors—red, gold, and black—embodying grandeur, nobility, auspiciousness, and joy. One dynamic and one serene, the designs complement each other perfectly. This stamp set is designed by Wang Huming and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Co., Ltd. using combined offset and engraving printing technology.
