Background
China Post plans to issue a set of 2 commemorative stamps themed "Mascots of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Winter Paralympic Games" on January 16, 2020. The designs are titled respectively: Mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games, with a total face value of 2.40 yuan for the complete set.On September 17, 2019, the mascots of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games were officially unveiled at the Ice Hockey Arena of the National Winter Sports Training Center in Shougang Park, Beijing. The Winter Olympic mascot "Bing Dwen Dwen" is designed based on the giant panda, with an overall image resembling an astronaut. It symbolizes extraordinary creation and exploring the future, embodying the pursuit of excellence, leading the times, and the infinite possibilities facing the future. The Winter Paralympic mascot "Shuey Rhon Rhon" takes the lantern as its prototype. The tone of "Chinese red" enhances the festive atmosphere of the 2022 Chinese Spring Festival, and its glowing body symbolizes lighting up dreams and warming the world. Representing friendship, courage, and perseverance, it reflects the fighting spirit of Winter Paralympic athletes and the Paralympic concept of inspiring the world.
The stamps feature a concise and elegant overall design. The white background forms a strong contrast with the black and red colors of the mascots, presenting a fresh and vivid visual effect. The 22 instances of the text "BEIJING 2022" printed on the white background of the two stamps create a sense of series continuity with the commemorative stamps Emblems of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and Winter Paralympic Games issued in 2017. Meanwhile, they further enrich the picture details and enhance the ornamental value of the stamps.
The stamps are printed with artistic techniques: subtle snowflake patterns are carved on the sheet margins, and the emoji designs of "Bing Dwen Dwen" and "Shuey Rhon Rhon" are also featured on the margins, further creating a romantic atmosphere of winter ice and snow sports. In addition, a QR code is printed on the sheet margins—scanning it allows viewers to watch exciting videos of the stamp set. Scanning the stamps with the "China Philately Stamp Encyclopedia" Mini Program provides access to more wonderful videos of the mascots "Bing Dwen Dwen" and "Shuey Rhon Rhon".
Designed by Shi Yuan, the set is printed by Beijing Stamp Factory using the photogravure process.
