Background

Nie Rongzhen(1899-1992),from Jiangjin, in Chongqing, Sichuan Province, was an outstanding and dedicated proletarian revolutionary and strategist. He was one of the founders of the People's Liberation Army of China and a celebrated leader of the Party and the PRC. During the revolutionary wars, he fought many battles and wisely commanded the army, displaying great courage, resourcefulness and military acuity. After the founding of the PRC, as a leader in China's scientific and technological development, he accomplished the pioneering work under very tough conditions, laying the foundation for China's scientific and technological development, particularly in China's sophisticated defense and aerospace industry. His contribution to the Party and the people can never be forgotten.
