    Background info

The potted landscape art, praised as "a stereo picture and silent poem", is an exotic flower in the Chinese art treasury.

The potted landscape, in other words, landscape cultivated in a pot, is made by putting artistic touches on the plants, stones stored in a pot to make it an ornament - a miniature of natural beauty. In general, potted landscape falls into two categories: potted landscape composed of snakes, and that made of stones and waters.

To make a potted landscape of stones and water, one needs to carve and corrode stones, and put them in a dainty pan pot, which is dotted by miniature pavilions, bridge, boat, plants and lichens, then employ the finest workmanship, thus arranging them to conform to the law of nature, and reflect the natural scenery with poetic charm: "Mountains extending hundreds of miles, all are contained in a pot that is so small", and with a finishing touch, the potted landscape is rich in poetic and artistic conception.

The potted landscape may be as long as nine meters, or it could be one meter also in minimum. However, it looks heroic and imposing, with lofty, famous mountains, vast deserts, and endless seas condensed in a pot.

In recent years, the potted landscapes made by the People's Park of Jingjiang City, in East China's Jiangsu Province, have won several prizes in the gardening competition both at home and abroad. With unique styles, their works imitate the natural scenery and pursue new fashions; and with chic modeling, the works created by the park are depicting far-ranging themes, and conveying profound and lasting affections. The works combine the features of the magnificence and strangeness of the potted art in North China, and also the elegance and grace of the potted art in the south.
