    Background info

    Since inaugurated in 1986, the Asian Winter Games has been held three times.

    The first Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan on March 1 to 8, 1986. There were eight events set for the games, including speed skating, short track speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey, mountain skiing, platform skiing. Thirty-seven golds were set for the games. Participants included China, South Korea, Japan, India, the democratic People's Republic of Korea, Mongolia an Hong Kong. The host Japan tops the medal tally.

    The Second Asian Winter Games was held in Sapporo, Japan from March 9 to 14 in 1990. Participants were from 10 countries and regions, including China, the democratic People's Republic of Korea, South Korea, Iran, Mongolia, the Philippines, India, Japan and Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, competing for 33 golds in the seven events including speed skating, ice hockey and Mountain skiing. Japan issued a set of commemorative stamps ( local version ) for the games. Again Japan stood No. 1 on the gold tally.

    The third Winter Games was held in Harbin, China on February 4 to 11, 1996. Sixteen countries and regions, including China, Japan and Kazakstan, participated in the games to compete for the 45 golds in the nine events, such as speed skating, ice hockey, cross-country skiing. China won 15 golds, which out it the first place on the medal tally.
