Background
China Post is scheduled to issue a set of 1 commemorative stamp themed "50th Anniversary of the Successful Cultivation of the World's First Hybrid Rice" on October 25, 2023. The design title of the stamp is 50th Anniversary of the Successful Cultivation of the World's First Hybrid Rice, with a total face value of 1.20 yuan for the entire set. The planned circulation of the stamp is 6,711,000 sets.

Hybrid rice refers to the first-generation hybrid seeds with heterosis produced by crossing two rice varieties that have certain genetic differences while their superior traits can complement each other. Heterosis is a common phenomenon in the biological world; utilizing heterosis to improve crop yield and quality is one of the major achievements of modern agricultural science. In 1973, after Yuan Longping successfully cultivated hybrid rice, it played a crucial role in the large-scale increase of China's grain output. Additionally, it has been applied in large-scale production in Vietnam, India, the Philippines, the United States and other countries, achieving remarkable yield-increasing effects.

The stamp design adopts the artistic language of copperplate engraving, composed of fine parallel lines and light colors, presenting rich layers and fresh, bright tones. The golden rice ears in the picture are subtly integrated with the vast fields to form the shape of rice grains. On the right side of the picture, the principle diagram of the "three-line system" hybrid rice breeding is displayed. The design is ingenious in conception and prominent in theme. This set of stamps was designed by Chen Nan and printed by Beijing Stamp Factory using the offset-engraving combination printing (partial embossing) process.
