On May 1, 1947, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region was founded. As the first provincial-level ethnic autonomous region established under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, it pioneered the system of regional ethnic autonomy in China. Over the past seven decades, under the correct leadership of the Party Central Committee and guided by the glorious policy of regional ethnic autonomy, people of all ethnic groups in the region have worked together with fortitude and made remarkable achievements in revolution, construction and reform. They have opened up a brand-new chapter in reform and opening-up as well as modernization drive. The land of Inner Mongolia now presents a beautiful picture of economic development, ethnic unity, cultural prosperity, border stability, ecological conservation and happy lives for people of all ethnic groups.

China Post issued a set of 3 commemorative stamps themed "The 70th Anniversary of the Founding of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region" on May 1, 2017. With the design themes of "Helping and Watching Over Each Other", "Splendid Northern Borderland" and "Ethnic Harmony", the stamps respectively depict the mutual assistance between the military and civilians, the achievements in ecological and economic development, and scenes of ethnic unity. Printed using the gravure printing technology, the full sheet of stamps measures 180 mm × 220 mm and contains 18 stamps (6 sets) printed in a connected format.

The first stamp portrays the scene of military and civilian unity in jointly safeguarding the motherland’s borders and helping and watching over each other. The second stamp shows Mongolian people singing and laughing in front of yurts, with lush pastures and flocks of cattle and sheep nearby. The middle ground features grassland activities with strong ethnic characteristics such as wrestling and horse racing. Wind turbines, highways and electricity pylons dot the vast grassland, demonstrating not only the magnificent natural scenery of the grassland but also the achievements made by Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region over the past 70 years in economic, scientific, technological, cultural and ecological development. The third stamp depicts people of all ethnic groups gathering in front of the site of the May 1st Conference, dressed in their ethnic costumes, singing and dancing against the backdrop of fluttering red silk ribbons. It vividly showcases the spirit of brothers and sisters of all ethnic groups who stay true to their original aspiration, strive forward in unity and jointly create a happier and better future for the autonomous region.
