Background
The Yangtze River, flowing from west to east across central China, traverses 11 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the central government: Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanghai. Its hundreds of tributaries extend into parts of eight additional provinces and autonomous regions, including Guizhou, Gansu, Shaanxi, Henan, Guangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian, covering a total of 19 provincial-level administrative regions. The river's drainage basin covers 1.8 million square kilometers, approximately one-fifth of China's total land area. It is the longest river in China and Asia, and the third longest in the world. The Yangtze originates from the Tanggula Mountains in Qinghai Province and eventually empties into the East China Sea at Shanghai. A significant portion of the Huaihe River's water also flows into the Yangtze via the Grand Canal. The Yangtze River is a special stamp set issued by China Post on September 13, 2014, as a tribute to the 65th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, bringing the great river to the "national calling card." The set comprises 9 stamps with catalog number 2014-20.
The stamps are based on the monumental artwork "The Yangtze River" painted by Yuan Yunfu, with supplementary designs by Yuan Jia, reflecting the new landscapes along the river. The nine stamps depict nine scenes: "The Great River Flows East," "Mountainous Chongqing," "The Three Gorges Wonder," "Hunan and Hubei by the River," "Mount Lu Scenery," "The Unique Beauty of Huangshan," "Spring Dawn in Jinling," "Riverside Water Towns," and "Flowing into the Sea." The panoramic views include the mountains of Sichuan and Chongqing, the high lakes of Yichang, the three cities of Wuhan, Dongting Lake and Yueyang Tower, the ethereal scenery of Mount Lu, the majestic peaks of Huangshan, Nanjing, Wuxi's Plum Garden, Suzhou's water towns, Nantong, and the great metropolis of Shanghai.
"The Great River Flows East" depicts scenes such as Tiger Leaping Gorge, the source of the Yangtze at Geladandong, and the First Bend of the Yangtze.
"Mountainous Chongqing" shows the Yuzhong Peninsula, the Jialing River, and the Dongshuimen Bridge over the Yangtze.
"The Three Gorges Wonder" features the Wu Gorge, Qutang Gorge and Kuimen, and the White Emperor City.
"Hunan and Hubei by the River" presents Dongting Lake, Yueyang Tower, the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, Enshi terraced fields, Zigui Phoenix Mountain, and the Three Gorges Dam.
"Mount Lu Scenery" depicts Mount Lu, the Imperial Stele Pavilion, the site of the Lushan Conference, the Lulin Lake Hydropower Station, and the Haohan Slope.
"The Unique Beauty of Huangshan" features Huangshan Mountain, Lotus Peak, the Welcoming Pine, and Tiandu Peak.

"Riverside Water Towns" presents Nantong's Langshan Mountain, Zhenjiang's Jiaoshan Mountain, Wuxi's Plum Garden, the Canglang Pavilion, the Jiangyin Yangtze River Bridge, and Suzhou's Tiger Hill.
"Flowing into the Sea" features the Donghai Bridge, the Sutong Yangtze River Bridge, Shanghai's Bund, Lujiazui, the Nanpu Bridge, and Nanjing Road.
