Background
On June 5, 2010, the special stamp "Energy Conservation and Emission Reduction – Protecting the Environment" (catalog number 2010-13) was officially issued, coinciding with the 39th World Environment Day. The set consists of two stamps, each with a face value of 1.20 yuan, for a total face value of 2.40 yuan. The stamps were designed by Chen Shaohua and Chen Guojin, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Works using the photogravure process. The international theme of World Environment Day 2010 was "Many Species, One Planet, One Future," while the domestic theme was "Low-Carbon Emission Reduction, Green Living." This stamp set interprets the concept of environmental protection from two perspectives: industrial development and everyday life. Using visual symbols such as clean energy and biodiversity, the stamps promote the national policy of conserving resources and reducing carbon emissions, advocate for transforming production methods and embracing green lifestyles, and convey the idea of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, demonstrating China's commitment to energy conservation and ecological protection.
Stamp Designs and Historical Background:
Low-Carbon Development
Image: The main subject is a wind turbine, with its blades dividing the image into four sections, featuring silhouettes of birds and people representing biodiversity, and modern urban architecture below.
History: Wind power is a typical renewable clean energy source, representing the direction of low-carbon industrial development. The design symbolizes the promotion of new energy sources and industrial restructuring, pursuing a low-carbon, sustainable development path while balancing urban development and ecological protection.
Significance: Reflects the strategy of energy conservation and emission reduction at the macro-industrial level.
Green Living
Image: A giant umbrella formed by solar photovoltaic panels, sheltering silhouettes of humans and various animals, with blue sky and green land in the background.
History: The solar umbrella symbolizes the protection of all life on Earth through green technology, promoting the concept of biodiversity conservation and encouraging the public to adopt a green lifestyle.
Significance: Advocates for a green lifestyle with broad public participation.
Artistic and Design Features:
Format: Uniform vertical stamp format, with a unified design language, simple and modern graphics, and decorative silhouette style.
Color: The first stamp uses bright, varied colors, distinguishing urban and ecological areas; the second uses blue and green tones to create a fresh, natural atmosphere.
Imagery: Uses two representative clean energy symbols—wind and solar power—that are easily understood and have educational value.
Narrative Logic: One stamp focuses on industrial transformation, the other on daily life, combining macro and micro perspectives to fully interpret the theme.
This stamp set is one of the few special stamps dedicated to ecological protection and low-carbon development in China. Issued on World Environment Day, it carries a distinct contemporary advocacy significance. It is suitable for thematic collections on environmental protection, new energy development, and social welfare, and can be collected together with other nature and ecology-themed stamps.
