China Post is scheduled to issue a set of 4 special stamps and 1 souvenir sheet under the title "Classic Chinese Literary Masterpiece – Journey to the West (III)" on April 20, 2019. The names of the stamp designs are respectively: "Subduing the White-Boned Demon Three Times", "Outwitting the Red Boy", "Contesting Magic in the Kingdom of Chechi", and "Obstacle of Affection in the Kingdom of Women". The design of the souvenir sheet is titled "The Gods Capturing the Green Ox". The total face value of the complete set of stamps is 11.40 yuan.Journey to the West, written by Wu Chengen, a novelist of the Ming Dynasty, is a chapter-style novel and a classic work of ancient Chinese mythological novels. The book consists of 100 chapters, depicting the story of Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing protecting the monk Tang Xuanzang on his journey to the Western Regions to obtain Buddhist scriptures. Along the way, they go through hardships, subdue demons and monsters, and finally achieve enlightenment. It creates a magnificent and magical mythical world. The book portrays a large number of vivid characters, full of romantic fantasy. It contains rich life philosophy within its humor and satire, and embodies the spirit of criticizing social conditions, pursuing ideals, and making unremitting progress.
This set of stamps is the third group of the "Classic Chinese Literary Masterpiece – Journey to the West" stamp series, which has been issued since 2015. The images vividly present some wonderful plots from Chapter 27 to Chapter 54 of the novel. Based on the original novel, the painter adopts the traditional technique of meticulous brushwork with heavy colors, while focusing on capturing the spirit through depicting the form. The characters are portrayed realistically and vividly, and the well-known story plots are vividly interpreted within the small space of the stamps.
This set of stamps is designed by Li Yunzhong and printed by Beijing Stamp Factory using the photogravure process.
