Background
Fruits are beloved by people for their rich nutrition, diverse varieties, bright colors and sweet flavors. In China, fruits are also endowed with a variety of life delights and auspicious implications.Apricots are rich in iron and vitamin A, with a sweet and sour taste that is refreshing. As the Chinese character "xing" (apricot) is a homophone of "xing" (blessing) and "xing" (prosperity), apricots symbolize happiness, good fortune and thriving development.
Grapes, which are nutrient-rich and can be eaten fresh or made into wine, are among the oldest cultivated plants in the world. Bearing clusters of plump fruits, grapes are used as a metaphor for harvest and abundance.
Watermelons are sweet and delicious, capable of clearing heat and relieving summer heat, making them one of the main fruits in summer. The red flesh of watermelons symbolizes the flourishing prosperity of life and career.
Litchis are crystal clear, sweet and juicy. Since the Chinese character "li" (litchi) is a homophone of "li" (profit), litchis imply great luck and prosperity.
The special stamp set Fruits (Series II) was issued by China Post on July 23, 2016. The full set of 4 stamps features apricots, grapes, watermelons and litchis respectively. The stamp designs adopt a realistic style combined with 3D embossing technology to create a three-dimensional effect. The background incorporates a moon shape to symbolize reunion and happiness, paired with watercolor rendering techniques to form a contrast between virtual and real elements. The pattern of Dezhou watermelons is specially marked with origin information, reflecting the intention of promoting local characteristic agricultural products.
