Background
This stamp set was officially issued on October 13, 2007. It consists of four stamps, each with a face value of 1.20 yuan, for a total face value of 4.80 yuan. The stamps were designed and engraved by Jiang Weijie, with Chen Yisi serving as the responsible editor, and printed by Beijing Stamp Printing Works using a combination of offset and intaglio (engraving) printing.

With the construction of the Three Gorges Dam project, a large number of historically significant ancient buildings in the reservoir area were relocated, reconstructed, or preserved in situ. This stamp set features four representative cultural landmarks along the Three Gorges, capturing their appearance after relocation and preservation. It documents the major achievements in rescuing and protecting cultural relics in the Three Gorges area, presents the rich and brilliant Ba-Chu culture of the Yangtze River basin, and preserves the unique cultural memory of the Three Gorges.

Stamp Designs and Historical Background

Zhang Fei Temple

Originally located in Yunyang, Chongqing, the temple was relocated and reconstructed due to the rising waters of the Three Gorges Dam. Built against the mountain and facing the river, with layered eaves, it is a famous ancient structure dedicated to Zhang Fei of the Three Kingdoms period, often praised as a "literary and cultural treasure."

Shibaozhai (Stone Treasure Fortress)

Located in Zhongxian, Chongqing, this tower-like pavilion structure was built on Yuyin Mountain. After protective works, it became an island in the river, making it a highly recognizable landmark of the Three Gorges.

Dachang Ancient Town

A thousand-year-old town in Wushan, Chongqing, it preserves the complete layout of Ming and Qing Dynasty streets and residences. It was fully relocated and reconstructed, representing the best-preserved Ming and Qing folk dwellings in the Three Gorges reservoir area.

Qu Yuan's Tomb

Located in Zigui, Hubei, this tomb and temple honor the patriotic poet Qu Yuan, carrying the legacy of Chu poetry and the Dragon Boat Festival culture.

Artistic and Design Features

The four stamps use a varied layout alternating between horizontal and vertical formats, with fine and ancient-style lines produced by the combined offset and intaglio printing technique. The engraving delicately captures the textures of wooden eaves, white walls, and dark tiles, creating a steady and elegant style. The alternating horizontal and vertical compositions add visual richness, fully presenting the distinct architectural characters of the four landmarks.

This stamp set is a special issue on the theme of Three Gorges cultural relic protection and ancient architecture, available in stamp set and large sheet formats. Collectors often pair it with the 1994-18 "Three Gorges of the Yangtze River" stamp set to form a complete collection on the scenery and culture of the Three Gorges, making it a classic item in Yangtze River culture-themed stamp collections.
