Background
The commemorative stamp set 95th Anniversary of the Birth of Comrade Chen Yun was issued on June 13, 2000. It consists of four stamps with a total face value of 5.20 yuan. The paintings were created by Chen Yifei, and the stamps were designed by Wang Huming. They were printed by Henan Post and Telecommunications Printing Factory using offset printing. The year 2000 marked the 95th anniversary of Comrade Chen Yun's birth. The stamps use four oil paintings created by Chen Yifei to recreate Chen Yun's image at different historical stages and commemorate this veteran proletarian revolutionary.Chen Yun was a great proletarian revolutionary and statesman, an outstanding Marxist, and one of the founders and pioneers of China's socialist economic construction. He held important positions in both the first and second generations of the central leadership. The stamp set follows the chronological line of the revolution, selecting images from four key historical periods to show his extraordinary journey through revolutionary struggle, economic construction, and reform and opening-up. It promotes his noble ideological character of adhering to seeking truth from facts—"not only from superiors, not only from books, but only from reality"—and commemorates his enduring contributions to the cause of the Party and the people throughout his life.
Stamp Designs and Historical Background
Shanghai Qingpu – Childhood and Youth
The stamp depicts Chen Yun in his youth. Chen Yun was born in Qingpu, Shanghai. In his early years, he was an apprentice at the Commercial Press, where he came into contact with progressive ideas and embarked on the revolutionary path. This was the starting point of his revolutionary career, bearing witness to the journey of an ordinary young man growing into a revolutionary.
Yan'an – War of Resistance Against Japan
The stamp shows Chen Yun's image during the Yan'an period. During the War of Resistance, he served as the head of the Central Organization Department in Yan'an, making important contributions to the Party's organizational construction and cadre training. In the difficult environment of the base area, he worked diligently to accumulate revolutionary strength.
Northeast China – War of Liberation
The stamp depicts Chen Yun working in Northeast China during the War of Liberation. On the Northeast battlefield, he led base area construction and economic work and participated in major struggles such as the "Four Defenses of Linjiang," stabilizing the Northeast liberated area and laying the foundation for the victory of the Liaoshen Campaign.
Beijing – Socialist Construction and Reform and Opening-Up
The stamp presents Chen Yun's image in his later years. After the founding of New China, he presided over national financial and economic work, stabilizing prices and unifying finance. During the reform and opening-up period, he attached importance to Party conduct and economic adjustment, playing a key role in the country's exploration of a development path suited to its national conditions.
Artistic and Design Features
The stamp set uses the original oil paintings as the basis for the images. The figures are painted with a steady and substantial style, with expressive expressions and a dignified, restrained color palette. The offset printing provides soft and delicate layers, faithfully reproducing the texture of the oil painting brushwork. The four portraits are arranged in chronological order, linking together Chen Yun's magnificent life. The images are simple, without extraneous decoration. Using the art form of realistic figure oil painting to commemorate the pioneer, it is a classic work in the category of revolutionary figure commemorative stamps.
